《 Rain, Steam, and Speed - The Great Western Railway 》

1844,
Joseph Mallord William Turner

Joseph Mallord William Turner, 1775–1851

A steam engine comes towards us as it crosses the Maidenhead Railway Bridge in the rain. The train heads west, while we are looking east towards London.

The exaggeratedly abrupt foreshortening of the viaduct makes the bridge seem to rush forward, suggesting the speed with which the train bursts into view through the rain. Roughly midway along the track, Turner lightly brushed in a hare, allowing us to compare the speed of the natural world with the mechanised speed of the engine.

On the river on the left, you can see a small boat and, barely visible near the right edge of the picture, a man drives a horse-drawn plough. Both are examples of relatively slow, non-mechanised activity.

As in The Fighting Temeraire, Turner contrasts the pre-industrial world with the modern age of machinery and speed.

Inspired by women’s fashion of the Industrial Revolution, this newly illustrated costume design depicts a figure holding an umbrella, carrying her belongings, and waiting for a train.

She appears to stand at a crossroads of time, reflecting a moment where the past and a new era intersect.

《The Water-Lily Pond》

1899, Claude Monet

In 1893 Monet bought a plot of land next to his house in Giverny. He had already planted a colourful flower garden, but now he wanted to create a water garden ‘both for the pleasure of the eye and for the purpose of having subjects to paint'. He enlarged the existing pond, filling it with exotic new hybrid water lilies, and built a humpback bridge at one end, inspired by examples seen in Japanese prints. The water garden became the main obsession of Monet’s later career, and the subject of some 250 paintings.

Here, the bridge spans the width of the canvas but is cut off at the edges so that it seems to float unanchored above the water, its shape reflected in a dark arc at the bottom of the picture. The perspective seems to shift; it is as though we are looking up at the bridge but down on the water lilies which float towards the distance. The vertical reflections of the trees provide a counterpoint to the horizontal clumps of the lily pads.

Monet created a Japanese-style garden at his home, featuring an arched wooden bridge and water lilies, surrounded by plants such as willows and wisteria. His work was also influenced by Japanese ukiyo-e prints, leading him to develop a distinctive artistic vision where Eastern and Western sensibilities intersect.

In this newly illustrated costume design, elements inspired by the plants found in Monet’s garden and traditional Japanese bridges are incorporated to express a connection with the world of his work.

《 Sunflowers 》

1888, Vincent van Gogh

This painting is one of five versions of Sunflowers on display in museums and galleries across the world. Van Gogh painted seven versions in total.

Van Gogh made the paintings to decorate his house in Arles in readiness for a visit from his friend and fellow artist, Paul Gauguin.

The different stages in the sunflower’s life cycle are shown here, from young bud to full bloom, maturity, and eventual decay. In this way, the work may reflect the transient nature of human actions, while also serving as a symbol of friendship and a celebration of the beauty and vitality of nature.

No other artist has been so closely associated with a specific flower, and this series remains one of Van Gogh’s most iconic and best-loved works worldwide.

Sunflowers, was painted during the period when Vincent van Gogh had moved to southern France, and through the depiction of the flowers—from budding to full bloom and eventual withering—it expresses the cycle of life.

In this newly illustrated design, the warm sunlight of southern France and the radiant brilliance of sunflowers are symbolically incorporated to create a world filled with happiness, hope, and vitality. The warmth and strength inherent in the original work are reinterpreted through a fresh perspective.
